Question: Where Does Drip Edge Go

The drip edge should be installed on top of the underlayment at all rakes, and below or on top of the underlayment at the eaves. At the eaves, when installing the drip edge on top the underlayment, a 4-inch wide layer of asphalt roof cement (complying with the ASTM D4586, Type I or Type II) is required.

Does drip edge go on before ice and water shield?

The best way is to install the roof drip edge only along the eaves first, then place ice-and-water barrier (in the snowbelt) or felt paper (underlayment) over the drip edge.

Can you install drip edge after shingles?

The drip edge is often replaced when new shingles are installed, but it can be replaced at any time. Asphalt roof shingles can become brittle in cold weather, so wait until a warm (but not hot) day to remove and replace eave stripping.

How far should shingles hang over drip edge?

Shingles should be installed over the drip edge a minimum of 3/8” (9 mm) at both the eave edge and the rake edge. If the drip edge extends… out from the rakes and eaves (typically called DL Style or D Type), the shingles may be installed flush with the drip edge.

Does drip edge go on before fascia?

The correct placement of a roof drip edge is on top of the roof’s exterior cover directly between the sheathing and the fascia board, which forms a drainage gap between the drip edge and the fascia board. As a result, the drainage improves water flow and protects the roof from potential water damage.

How far below the drip edge should the gutter be?

A safe distance between the gutter and the roof edge should be between 2 to 3 inches. If the gutter distance is more than 3 inches, the rain will run off the roof and won’t drain properly.

The edge of the shingles should hang over a roof between an inch and an inch and a half — or between a half inch and three-quarters of an inch if drip edge flashing is installed. Too much overhang and the shingles could blow off in high winds; too little can allow water to seep into rake or fascia boards.

Does drip edge go on rakes and eaves?

It’s important to understand that drip edge installation is different for eaves and rakes. After your roof deck has been prepared, and before you install underlayment, you need to install drip edges at the eaves. You install drip edges on the rakes after you install the underlayment.

Should shingles overhang gutters?

Most shingle manufacturers recommend a 1/4 to 3/8 inch overhang over your eave, which is where your roof ends by your gutter. In many cases, and particularly as the home ages and settles, the roof edge at the eave edge can wave in and out by more than this amount.

A metal drip edge will help protect the sheathing under the roof, but if it’s installed too closely to the fascia board, it can still cause water to be drawn into the fascia. The best installation method is to leave a gap between the drip edge and the fascia board, about the width of a finger.

Do you nail drip edge to fascia?

You don’t. The drip edge is attached onto the plywood roof decking before any shingles are installed. And assuming that the roof’s bottom edge has a typical fascia trim, that trim should be in place before the drip edge.

A gutter apron also comes in metal strips with aluminum and steel sheets. Like drip edge, a gutter apron may be available in many different colors.
