ArtPrize lasts for 19 days beginning in late September, and during each festival $500,000 in cash prizes are awarded based on public voting and a jury of art experts. ArtPrize was originally an annual event; in 2018 it was switched to a biennial schedule.

From the beginning, ArtPrize was a totally new type of citywide event intended to disrupt typical highly curated art prizes. And from the beginning it has provoked discussion, on the streets and online. The brainchild of native Grand Rapidian and entrepreneur Rick DeVos, the first ArtPrize took place in 2009.
Who started ArtPrize?
Rick DeVos, age 35, is an entrepreneur and investor. In 2009 he created ArtPrize, a simple social experiment designed to see if artists and the public could engage each other in a new way. The scale and energy of the event launched it into debates all over the art world, from urban planning circles to the global press.

How many ArtPrize entries are there?
It’s set to feature 881 entries from 957 artists at 144 venues around the city. With 144 venues scattered throughout the city, it’s possible to see a lot of art in a lot of places in Grand Rapids. Most of the venues are located downtown, such as Amway Grand Hotel, Calder Plaza, DeVos Place and Ah-Nab-Awen Park.

RULES REGARDING SOLO ARTIST ENTRY AND ENTRY FEE: To enter ArtPrize as a Solo Artist, the Artist must register with ArtPrize through the ArtPrize website (the “Artist Agreement”). By registering and submitting the Artist Agreement, the Artist agrees to be bound by and comply with these Rules.
