What are the 3 active antiretrovirals comprised of?
Most HAART regimens include drugs from at least two of the three classes of antiretroviral therapy (nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors, non-nucleoside analog RT inhibitors, and protease inhibitors).
How many antiretroviral drugs are there?
There are more than 30 antiretroviral medications in six drug classes; these are listed below. Each class of drug attacks HIV in a different way.
What is art and ARV?
ARV stands for Antiretrovirals and ART stands for Antiretroviral treatment. These both refer to the same medication, used to treat HIV.
How do antiretrovirals work?
Antiretroviral drugs HIV is treated with antiretroviral medicines, which work by stopping the virus replicating in the body. This allows the immune system to repair itself and prevent further damage. A combination of HIV drugs is used because HIV can quickly adapt and become resistant.
Why is nevirapine not used in PEP?
In 2001, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended avoiding the use of nevirapine for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after several high profile life-threatening side-effects of nevirapine – including liver failure and severe skin reactions – were reported amongst people taking nevirapine as PEP.
Is Biktarvy a HAART?
Bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide is an example of a combination drug that can be taken as a complete regimen for treatment of the human immunodeficiency virus. Combination therapy for HIV, often called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), is composed of two or more types of antiretroviral drugs.
What is ART virus?
ART stands for antiretroviral treatment. It is also called combination therapy or HIV treatment. What are ARVs? HIV drugs are called antiretrovirals (ARVs) because HIV is a type of virus called a retrovirus. ART generally includes three active drugs but a few new options only use two drugs.
Can efavirenz be used as PEP?
Our simulations strongly suggest that 400 mg efavirenz can potently prevent infection with drug susceptible HIV, when used as once daily PrEP, during “PrEP on demand” and even as PEP, if initiated early enough after exposure (Figures 3, 4).
Is PEP an ARV?
PEP is the use of antiretroviral drugs after a single high-risk event to stop HIV seroconversion. PEP must be started as soon as possible to be effective—and always within 72 hours of a possible exposure.
What is NVP prophylaxis?
Infant: daily NVP from birth until 6 weeks of age (since the infant is breastfeeding and immediate protection is desirable, NVP would be the preferred infant prophylaxis and given for a full 6 weeks).

Is ritonavir used in PEP?
Lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) is an attractive PEP candidate with presumably higher efficacy against HIV than nevirapine or lamivudine, and a higher genetic barrier to resistance selection.
Is PrEP and PEP the same drug?
PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis and PEP stands for post-exposure prophylaxis. Prophylaxis means “treatment or actions taken to prevent a disease.” PrEP is a treatment plan to prevent HIV before a person is exposed while PEP is a treatment plan for after a person is exposed.
