Delft clay is an oilsand designed for fine casts – it’s a mixture of sand, clay and oil. The process is fairly straightforward but as you’ll see, it’s not as failsafe as other casting methods.
Where does Delft clay come from?
✅ The Delft Clay Method is a highly refined form of sand casting that substitutes genuine Delft Clay from Holland for ordinary casting sand. The process was invented by Hans Karreman, a Dutch goldsmith.
What is Petrobond made of?
Petrobond – What is it? This sand consists of a mulled mixture of fine sand, oil, PETROBOND binder, and a small amount of catalyst. Petrobond MX sand contains oil instead of water, and needs much less venting. The amount and type of oil used creates considerable less gas than is created in ordinary water sands.
Can you cast metal in clay?
The first step in metal casting involves making the mold. You can use sand or clay as casting grains. After the metal liquefies, pour it into the mold carefully. Metal hardens quickly.
Can you cast silver in clay?
The items you need to cast are as follows:- item to be cast, crucible to heat the silver in, delft clay (a type of sand with oil additive), talcum powder, blow torch, metal ruler, hammer, borax powder and of course casting rings. Most people buy aluminium casting rings that cost around 25 to 50 pounds.
How do you make homemade Delft Clay?
A Delft Clay mold is created in these steps:
- Fill and compact the Clay into one half of the aluminum ring frame.
- Remove excess clay with a straight edge (e.g. a flexible steel ruler)
- Press your original pattern halfway into the clay.
- Brush Mica Powder or talcum powder over this surface of the mold.
How do you make K bonds?
Named for Kent State where it was developed, K-Bond is an almost smokeless oil-bonded foundry sand. Typically, it’s used for casting zinc, aluminum, brass, bronze and iron. Mixing: Mix the sand and bentone clay first (wear a dust mask), then blend in the oil thoroughly.
Can you reuse casting sand?
The short answer is yes, casting sand can be reused. However, rejuvenation is often required to ensure the best result possible on castings incorporating previously used sand.
What is Petrobond sand?
– Petrobond is a formulated bonding agent, bonding sand with oil instead of water. – Less gas is formed permitting use of finer sands with lower permeability. Petrobond gives a finer finish. – Petrobond produces near die cast quality casting with green sand practice.
How do you make foundry sand?
- Step 1: Digging Clay. Buy or dig some clay.
- Step 2: Find Some Sand. Buy or dig sand.
- Step 3: Make Clay Into Fine. Make clay into fine and clean the sand if it has any contaminant.
- Step 4: Formula. My formula of green sand is 70% of sand and 30 % of clay.
- Finally mix sand with clay. During the process, spray some water.
What is green sand for casting?
The “Green” in greensand casting refers to the moisture content of the sand, rather than the color or type of sand. Just as untreated, undried wood is often referred to as “green,” so is the moist sand used for greensand casting.
How do you cast a clay mold?

- Step 2: Pour. Pour the plaster or epoxy into the mold. I used Durham’s Rock Hard. Add Tip Ask Question Comment Download.
- Step 3: Let It Dry. Let it dry and peel it out. Bam!
What kind of sand do you use to cast aluminum?
Green sand, which is new or regenerated sand mixed with natural or synthetic binders, is the most commonly used material for making aluminum expendable molds. Green sand molds get their name from the fact that they are still moist when the molten metal is poured into them.
What is cuttlefish casting?
Cuttlefish casting is a quick and fairly accurate casting method. The back plate or cuttlebone of the ordinary squid (genus: sepia) serves as the mold material. The elliptical shell is a bright white, porous material that can be easily indented by pressing a model into it.
What is Delft sand?
The Delft Clay Method is a highly refined form of sand casting. Delft Clay is much finer than casting sand, providing remarkably sharp and highly detailed castings in gold, silver, copper-based alloys, pewter, etc. Castings require very little finishing work.
Which sand is used for Moulding?
A sand used for facing of the mould is known as facing sand. It consists of silica sand and clay, without addition of used sand. It is used directly next to the surface of the pattern. Facing sand comes in direct contact with the hot molten metal; therefore it must have high refractoriness and strength.
What is meant by Moulding sand?
Molding sand, also known as foundry sand, is a sand that when moistened and compressed or oiled or heated tends to pack well and hold its shape. It is used in the process of sand casting for preparing the mould cavity.
Can Delft clay be reused?
Delft clay is just a pain to clean up, especially if you step in it. Delft clay is also reusable so being able to save as much of it as possible would be ideal because delft clay is expensive.
How are sand castings made?
The sand casting process involves the use of a furnace, metal, pattern, and sand mold. The metal is melted in the furnace and then ladled and poured into the cavity of the sand mold, which is formed by the pattern. The sand mold separates along a parting line and the solidified casting can be removed.
What oil is used in Petrobond?
Any vegetable oil should work OK. Peanut and olive oil would be my first guesses for a good oil, though sunflower and canola should also work. Corn oil boils and burns at a lower temperature, which will mean more gas generated in the mold, but as long as the sand is permeable and well vented it should still work.
