Both options are great for crafting, depending on what your project needs are. Smart Vinyl comes in a wide variety of colors, effects and material lengths. Smart Iron-On is another kind of Smart Material you can use with your Joy, Maker 3 or Explore 3. Iron-on is another name for Heat Transfer Vinyl.
Can I use a regular iron for Cricut smart iron on?
Don’t worry, you can use a household iron to apply your heat transfer vinyl. Instead of applying your HTV by ironing like you iron a shirt, you want to mirror a heat press. This means you should be pressing and holding on the area you are pressing for 25-30 seconds before moving to the next area.
Do I need a mat for smart iron on vinyl?

Are Cricut Smart Materials worth it?

Why is my iron on vinyl not sticking?
Time- Pressing or ironing for too short a time can cause HTV not to stick to your shirt. Pressing or ironing for too long can have the same effect. HTV works by using a heat activated adhesive so too little time and it won’t heat enough to stick. Too long and it can actually burn the adhesive off.
Can you iron on vinyl on top of vinyl?

Does smart iron on go shiny side down?

If you’re working with a highly heat sensitive fabric, like some types of nylon, then a pre-press may harm more than help your project. Additionally, a pre-wash is not always necessary either.
How do you keep vinyl from peeling off tumblers?
Before you start, make sure your stainless steel tumbler or mug has been cleaned and dried. And clean the cup with rubbing alcohol. This helps to remove any remaining grease or residue that will prevent the vinyl from adhering properly. Let the vinyl cure on the cup for 48-72 hours to make sure it sticks well.
