Studor Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) are negative pressure-activated, one-way vents, used in a drainage system to eliminate the need for passive pipe venting and unsightly, costly roof penetrations.
How does a studor vent work?
Studor vents are used when a drain line and Vent aren’t connected to toilets. Methane comes up the sewer line on all drain lines but vents to outside air, to keep any pressure building in the pipe. The Studor vent lets that air to be sucked in the pipe during water flow but doesn’t let sewer gas escape out.
Where do you put studor vents?
Determine Placement. Air admittance valves are typically placed between the P-trap of a fixture and the drain line. They are usually mounted on one leg of a sanitary tee, with the other leg going to the drain. The unit must be placed in accordance with local codes and the manufacturer’s instructions.

How high does a Studor vent need to be?

Air admittance valves are constructed to last you about 20 to 30 years. Therefore, if you’re replacing the valves quite often, there’s a deeper problem. Usually, these happen because of problems with the valve itself. So if you’re experiencing clogging or a bad odor, you’ve got a faulty valve.
Do cheater vents work?
First and foremost—cheaters are not in the code, and are not allowed (*unless they are used in a very specific situations in an accessible cabinet). I highly recommend you do not use them, period.
