Our current formula has unparalleled protection against UV damage! We are continuing our search for a safer, clearer, epoxy resin with longterm protection against yellowing (UPDATE March 2015: We did it! We currently sell our proprietary epoxy resin formula on ArtResin.com)!.
Is ArtResin good for outdoors?
Can Resin Art Be Hung Outside? ArtResin epoxy resin contains advanced UV and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers to protect it from degradation (i.e. yellowing) caused by UV light, however exposing it deliberately to UV light is still not recommended to be safe.
Will resin hold up outdoors?
An epoxy is a popular option for flooring, garages, countertops, and many other home improvement projects. Epoxy can be used outside, but there are some extra steps you need to take because exposure to sunlight causes the epoxy to yellow over time.
Does resin melt in the sun?
Resin does not melt in the sun; this is due to the chemical compound found in resin. It can melt in the sun under ONE condition only. And that condition is that if you cure it. Cured resin can melt even in bare SUNLIGHT.
How long does epoxy resin last outside?
You won’t need to worry about redoing your patio anytime soon if you opt for epoxy flooring. The average lifespan of durable floor coatings can be upwards of 10 years.
Is epoxy resin UV resistant?
Epoxy is very resistant to wear, cracking, peeling, corrosion and damage from chemical and environmental degradation. Once cured, epoxy is moisture resistant. Epoxy is not, on its own, UV resistant. Some epoxies have a UV resistant additive added to them that works moderately well.
Does epoxy yellow in the sun?
Without a doubt, exposure to UV light is the most common reason epoxy resin can yellow. The impact that UV light rays have on epoxy resin over time excites the polymers’ molecules, causing them to break down. This natural effect of light exposure begins immediately when the resin is exposed to light.
How do you weatherproof resin?
To protect the paint on a resin statue, it’s necessary to use a product that provides protection from ultraviolet rays. Choose a clear, spray-on polyurethane product that states specifically that it provides UV protection. Such products are available in shiny or matte finishes.
Why does my resin get soft in the sun?
The resin will quickly harden up again once it cools down, but prolonged exposure may cause the resin to shift or distort. For example, a coaster left in a sunny window may become flexible, but will quickly harden up again once the temperature drops.
Is all resin heat resistant?
The answer to this question is yes, but there are certain criteria involved. First, the basic DIY epoxy resin for smaller projects can only withstand a certain amount of heat before it begins to distort.
Can you put hot things on resin?
Regular epoxy temperature limits are low, and any heat greater than 68 – 195 degrees Fahrenheit will likely cause some distortion in the resin. The best heat resistant epoxy can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit thanks to added fillers and reinforcements in the resin.
How long does epoxy resin take to cure UV light?
Be patient with curing time. You can start to work with poured 2-part resin components after about 24 hours, but you should allow 3 days to allow it to really cure. For UV resin, it takes about 15-20 minutes to cure each layer under a UV lamp, and a few hours to cure in direct sunlight.
Can I use epoxy resin outside?
Epoxy resin has come a long way to reach a state that it can be safely advised to be used for outdoor purposes. There are a number of outdoor grade epoxy resins, which are absolutely UV-resistant. This has made them a perfect choice for outdoor flooring.
How long does UV resin last?
The shelf life is only 6 months.
Does epoxy resin discolor?
It tends to discolor (amber) rapidly upon exposure to UV and even with indoor applications, epoxy still ambers over time; the degree at which it will discolor depends on the specific formulations and ingredients used.
Will colored resin fade in the sun?
Whatever light they are in, whether it is direct sunlight, indirect light, indoor lighting or, hell, just age – they all have an effect on the pigment of the resin and all – sadly – turn various stages of yellow. As the color pigments in resin begin to break down and fade the one color that seemingly doesn’t is yellow.
Is epoxy affected by UV?
Despite several excellent properties including low shrinkage, good chemical resistance, curable at low temperatures and the absence of byproducts or volatiles, epoxy resins are susceptible to ultra violet (UV) damage and their durability is reduced substantially when exposed to outdoor environments.
What happens to epoxy in the sun?
If used outdoors where it is exposed to sunlight, all epoxies will eventually yellow. This fundamental chemical reaction occurs when epoxy is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. The chemical makeup of epoxy is simply not stable when exposed to UV light.
How do you protect resin from ultraviolet light?
One of the most effective methods to protect against the corrosive effects of UV rays on polymer resins is through a process called UV stabilization. Polymers such as plastics, nylon, and synthetic rubber are essential raw materials in a huge number of modern applications.
Is ArtResin waterproof?
Yes. ArtResin epoxy resin is very durable and waterproof. Once cured, the resin is inert and therefore does not pose a threat to aquatic life.
Does resin crack in the cold?
Epoxy will not crack in the freezing weather. Instead, the concrete coated with the epoxy will crack. The epoxy cannot withstand the stress when the concrete cracks.
What happens if resin gets too hot?
If your resin overheats and smokes, you do not want to put it into a plastic or cardboard container. These can also leak or worse — catch fire. Do not throw the hot resin in your trash! The reaction is still occurring and can melt your trash can or start a fire.
How hot can UV resin get?
The maximum temperature that cured Craft Resin can tolerate after 21 days of curing is 200F or 93C. At temperatures as high as that, the cured pieces may become a little flexible but once they cool off, they will harden up once again.
How long does resin last?
Epoxy shelf life can last many years when resin and hardener are properly stored at room temperature and in closed containers to prevent contamination. Those who have used polyester resins know that its shelf life is only about six months before it turns to a useless jelly-like substance.
Can art resin withstand heat?
What Is ArtResin’s Heat Resistance? The maximum temperature that cured ArtResin can tolerate is 120F or 50C. At temperatures as high as that, the cured pieces may become a little flexible but once they cool off, they will harden up once again.
Will resin ashtrays melt?
No melting! The cured resin is not melting at all.
Can you make coasters with UV resin?
You need a UV lamp to cure the resin and the coasters will be ready in 3 minutes. To make these beach inspired resin coasters, you need to mix each of the desired colors with UV resin in separate cups. Use a stirring stick and mix the resin well for 1 minute. Pour the resin mixes one by one into the coasters.
