To smooth the surface of air dry clay you can use a little bit of water and either your fingers or silicone rubber sculpting tools to smooth the surface as much as possible before you let the clay dry. You can further smooth the clay surface after it has dried by sanding it with some fine-grit sandpaper.

Glide fingertips over the sculpture to smooth out any creases or redefine details after adding a new section to a sculpture made with water-based clay. Repeatedly dampen fingertips so that they don’t become sticky or dry.

Start with 91% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Brush it over the sculpture to remove large scratches, fingerprints, and tool marks. Mix water with the alcohol until you have about a 1:1 ratio. Continue brushing the sculpture with this new mix until the surface is as smooth as you can get it.
Can you use sandpaper on clay?
Wet/dry sandpaper is one of my favorite sandpapers to use when finishing polymer clay. It’s also one of the easiest to get hold of. Most hardware stores will stock a good range of grits. Wet/dry sandpaper is tough enough to get rid of unwanted finger prints, but not so harsh that it will mark the polymer clay.
Should I wet air dry clay?
