Do you nail or screw a stud wall?
Nails are often preferred for structural joining, including framing walls, because they are more flexible under pressure, whereas screws can snap. Nails are also called upon when securing plywood sheathing for exterior walls, installing hardwood floors, and attaching siding and roofing.
What screws to use on studs?
Coarse-threaded screws are for hanging drywall on wood studs, while fine-threaded screws work with metal studs. Drywall screws don’t have the strength to support cement board and tile.
Is it OK to frame with screws?
There are many manufacturers of joist hangars, and none of them approve the use of deck or wood screws as an attachment. The only kind of screws that are acceptable are specialized screws, such as the Simpson brand joist hanger screws, for use in the Simpson joist hanger systems.
Can you screw into the side of a 2×4?
Length Options Two-by-fours are 1 1/2 inches thick. It might seem appropriate to use 3-inch screws, but modern drill/drivers and impact drivers bury the head of the screw up to 1/2 inch, and the tip of a 3-inch screw can penetrate out the other side.
How far should screw go into stud?
The general rule of thumb is that the screw should enter at least half the thickness of the bottom material, e.g. 3/4″ into a 2 x 4. The other factor is the screw’s diameter, or gauge. Screws come in gauges 2 through 16. Most of the time you’ll want to go with a #8 screw.
Why do carpenters use nails instead of screws?
Screws are more brittle than nails. Nails don’t have a threaded shaft, so they aren’t as brittle as screws. And in turn, they offer greater tensile strength, making them desirable for construction and carpentry applications.
What size timber is used for stud walls?
You can make a stud wall frame from of either 75mm x 50mm or 100mm x 50mm of sawn timber. This comprises four things. There’s a ceiling or head plate, which is fixed to the ceiling joists. There’s also a matching length nailed to the floor, called the floor or sole plate.

Is it better to nail or screw drywall?
While nails tend to be more flexible and hold up better against shear pressure—or lateral force—screws have much better grip and tensile strength, which ultimately keeps drywall from pulling away from the studs. When it comes to holding power, screws simply can’t be beaten.
Why are screws not used for framing?
Nails have tremendous strength in shear, but are subject to pull-out. This is why nails are never used where subject to withdrawal forces, like a deck ledger. Screw are very resistant to pull-out, but are weak in shear. So no, we would not frame a house with deck or drywall screws.
Can you hammer in a screw?
Yes, a hammer can be used to set a screw into drywall or gypsum, for example. However, the threads of the screw are likely to rip a hole large enough that the screw will just pop back out again! How do you attach a 2×4 to a stud?
You can locate the studs with a magnetic stud finder (nails), and nail the 2X4s to them with finishing nails sunken with a nail punch and hidden with wood putty, or drill thorugh the 2X4s, screw them to the studs, and plug the screw holes with wooden dowel plugs, and sand, paint or stain to suit.
Do I need pilot holes for wood screws?
Pilot holes are necessary if you’re drilling into hardwood, laminate, or need a precisely located fastener. They’re also recommended if the wood is likely to crack, or if appearance is important. You can skip the pilot holes when doing a rough build with softwood where appearance isn’t important.

Does drilling into a stud weaken it?
Only a small fraction of the stud is necessary for the bearing strength of the wall. Every plumbing and electrical run in your house goes through much larger holes drilled through studs. If your cabinet is solid, your stud is fine. As long as you didn’t split the stud, I don’t think it’s an issue.
