Do you have to use thinset under backer board?
Using thinset under cement board is a commonly skipped step amongst many contractors. However, many manufacturers including, both Durock and Hardiebacker not only recommend that you use thinset under their backerboard, but they specify it and will void the warranty on their product if it’s not used.
Does Hardie board need to be glued down?
No. Where HardieBacker board is being installed over a code-complying subfloor for the attachment of tile, the board is installed over a 3/32”-1/4” thick bed of bonding mortar and then nailed down. This will require a longer curing time and result in a weaker bond between the tile and the mortar and the underlayment.
Can I just screw down cement board?
Screw and Joints Do not use drywall screws as they are not recommended to be used to hold the backer board in place. All of your backer board pieces should be cut before they are placed on the floor. It is important to highlight that screws shall not be installed all the way down to the floor joists.
Can you install cement board without thinset?
Installing cement board over a concrete subfloor. Not only is thinset a critical component underneath cement board but the other critical component is the fasteners. And you won’t have the fasteners if you are trying to install it over concrete.
Can you glue Hardie board to subfloor?
Apply a supporting bed of mortar or modified thinset to subfloor using a 1/4 in square-notched trowel. Embed HardieBacker cement board firmly and evenly in the wet mortar. Fasten HardieBacker cement board with specified nails or screws (as listed in “Materials Required”) every 8 in over the entire surface.
How do you fasten Hardie board?
Fastening Siding Fiber cement siding can be nailed by hand or with a pneumatic nailer. It can also be attached using corrosion resistant screws. Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails. Nails should penetrate through the sheathing and at least 1” into studs.
Do I need vapor barrier behind Hardibacker?
Hardibacker doesn’t need a vapor barrier or waterproofing except you do need to tape and thinset the joints.
Can I screw cement board to subfloor?
Cement board can be installed over a plywood subfloor using an appropriate construction adhesive and screws for a quicker project that’s less messy than taping and mudding.
Do you nail or screw cement board?
Cement board attached to plywood or similar underlayment will hold with only 1 1/4-inch screws; for thick or heavy metal fixtures, use 1 5/8-inch screws. In general, 1 1/2-inch galvanized nails will hold the board firmly in place. Even if you use this extra adhesive, you should still apply the nails or screws.
Do you have to tape seams on Hardibacker?
For tile backer boards such as Durock, Wonderboard, Hardiebacker, Permabase, and others the seams between the board need to be treated with 2-inch alkali-resistant mesh tape.
Can you tile straight onto Hardibacker?
Both 6mm and 12mm HardieBacker cement boards can be used on masonry walls. HardieBacker can take up to 200kg of tile hanging weight per m2 so almost any tile can be fixed. Once secured cover the joints with Alkaline-resistant tape and feather the tile adhesive to leave a 150mm wide joint.
Do you need plywood behind Hardie board?
Fiber cement siding should be installed over plywood, OSB, or sheathing. Building codes will usually require installing siding over water-resistant barriers and nailed into the studs every 16 or 24 inches.
Can you use 1/4 inch cement board on floors?
Both 1/4- and1/2-inch cement board are appropriate for floors. To install cement board on floors, cement board manufacturers mandate a 5/8-inch plywood subfloor or OSB underlayment.
What kind of thinset goes under cement board?

Can you install Hardie board over OSB?
In this case the thinset is used to fill all the voids between the hardie and osb, not to bond them together. The mechanical fasteners will hold the two together. No problem here using thinset and osb. It will probably be OK.
What adhesive do I use for cement board?

How do you attach Hardie board to plywood?
Position each piece of backer board in the thin-set, press in place, and attach using special backer board screws on the spacing recommended by the backer board manufacturer. Cover the joints in the backer board with fiberglass tape embedded in thin-set adhesive and allow to set before tiling.

Fasteners must be corrosion resistant, galvanized or stainless steel. James Hardie prefers and recommends installation of HardiePlank® lap siding by the blind nailing technique, such that fasteners are hidden by the course above. Fasteners shall be installed between 1 in. and 3/4 in.
What kind of screws do you use for Hardie board?
James Hardie recommends 1-1/4” long galvanized or STAINLESS steel roofing nails or 1-1/4” long ribbed waferhead screws in compliance with the tile industry. It is 8-18 x 3/8” HD.
Do you caulk Hardie board joints?
Joint-flashing material must be durable, waterproof material that does not react with cement based products. Other products may also be suitable. James Hardie DOES NOT recommend using caulk or “H”-jointers for the butt joints of HardiePlank® siding with ColorPlus® technology.
