How much beeswax do I need to make salve?

Salves are super simple to make at home and are endlessly customizable for any and every need. An easy, basic ratio to follow is 1 oz beeswax to 1 cup (8 oz) oil. You can adjust the consistency of your salve by shifting this ratio, adding more wax for a harder salve and less wax for a softer balm.

How do you thicken salve?

It’s easy to adjust the consistency of a salve by adding a bit more oil to make it more spreadable or a bit more beeswax to thicken or harden it. Homemade salves without any preservative agents will last about 6 to 8 months at room temperature out of direct heat and sunlight.

Can tinctures be used in salves?

A salve can be made from herbal tinctures. Using tinctures instead of chopped, dried herbs result in a light colored and very pretty salve. The salve will be pale tan/green instead of a dark, herbal, plant sort of green. (The addition of wheat germ oil turns even the greenest salve yellow!).

Can you freeze homemade salve?

If your salve or balm melts (temperatures over 110 F will typically do this given time) it will separate into a liquid and solid layer. You can fix grainy salves, balms and moisturizers by heating them back to liquid, stirring the contents until smooth and immediately placing the jar into a freezer for about an hour.

How do you store homemade salve?

Pour the still-warm salve into containers (old jam jars or small metal tins work well). If adding essential oils, do so now (only a few drops are need) and stir with a chopstick or other clean implement. Put the cap on the containers, and store in a dark, cool place. Salves will last up to a year.

Alternatively, you can mix your tincture in with a little bit of lotion as you apply it. By mixing tinctures with a standard lotion, you can actually make your pain cream! Adding too much tincture may make your topical too liquidy, but not adding enough tincture may not make the pain relief as effective.
