The spacers need to be in place until the tile adhesive sets, which usually takes from 20 to 30 minutes. Don’t leave them much longer than that, or they may get bonded to the adhesive. It’s never a good idea to leave spacers in place permanently and grout over them.
Do you take out tile spacers before grouting?
You can’t grout over conventional tile spacers or the grout will crack, so you have to remove them. The best time to do this is while the tile adhesive is still soft but has become hard enough to hold the tiles securely. Don’t wait until the end of the job to go back to the beginning and start removing tile spacers.
