Question: How Do You Apply Thistle Hardwall

How long does Hardwall take to dry?

How long does it take bonding to dry? Bonding about 2-3 hours, but some do leave it to following day before skimming depends on size of area. The 3-4 days is a guide, the colour of the plaster will tell you when it’s dry enough to paint.

Should I PVA before Hardwall?

You should put PVA on, but you cannot tile onto hardwall. It will need to be gone over with multifinish and then allowed to dry. A tiling sealer (not PVA) should then be applied prior to fixing tiles.

How thick should Hardwall plaster be?

When a substantial area is covered, Thistle Hardwall is worked and ruled as in hand plastering. It is easier to attain the required thickness of plaster in one application by machine, but the total thickness should not normally exceed 25mm (subject to background suitability).

Can you use SBR instead of PVA?

One key difference is that, whereas PVA remains water soluble after drying, once dry SBR is not. Consequently, the SBR bonding agent is more suitable for situations where damp might be a factor, such as external finishes, shower areas and swimming pools, as well as in sand or cement screeds and renders.

How do you bond with SBR?

For dustproofing concrete floors make sure that the surface is free of all oil, grease, existing sealers or other contaminants. Apply SBR Bonding Agent diluted 1 to 3 or 4 to the floor with a squeegee making sure that ponding does not occur. Leave for 24 hours to completely dry before allowing foot traffic.

How thick can bonding coat be?

I am aware that the maximum thickness of said bonding coat is 11mm.

How long does bond SBR take to dry?

Allow to dry thoroughly for 15-30 minutes before applying adhesive.

Can you tile on Thistle bonding?

No, tiles should not be applied directly to Thistle undercoats, with the exception of Thistle DriCoat.

Where should Hardwall plaster be used?

Hardwall Plaster: Hardwall is similar to Browning except that it offers a higher impact resistance and quicker drying surface. It is the most often used undercoat plaster these days, and can be applied to most masonry surfaces.

Does bonding plaster crack?

Bonding always cracks a bit, as long as its firm and solid, pva then skim. You could be applying it to thick.

Can you tile directly onto Hardwall?

If you want a surface to tile, sand and cement is the one, but any sound skimmed surface will do you. You can tile onto hardwall and it will last, and you can get hardwall closed in good enough with fat to help the tiler.

Does bonding crack?

one further thought, bonding coat will crack if you apply it too thickly as it loses a larger proportion of its volume through moisture loss. it should ideally be applied in layers no thicker than 11mm. if it requires more then build up in successive layers rather than trying to get the desired result in one hit.

How soon can you skim over bonding?

Bonding about 2-3 hours, but some do leave it to following day before skimming depends on size of area. The 3-4 days is a guide, the colour of the plaster will tell you when it’s dry enough to paint. Need to leave decent time between paint coats, for each to throughly dry before applying the next one.

What’s the difference between Hardwall and bonding?

bonding is a undercoat plaster for low suction background like concrete. hardwall has high impact resistance and is quicker drying.

How do I stop my plaster skim from cracking?

If you switched on your central heating while your plaster was drying, or the weather is extremely hot, plaster can dry out too rapidly and crack. These cracks are usually harmless and can be fixed using a bit of caulking.

Can I use Hardwall instead of bonding?

Hardwall is for block and brick, i also use it for filling in chases. If you want to use hardwall for low suction backgrounds such as a artex ceiling i would use a bonding agent such as bond-it or wicks plaster bonding agent rather that pva, That is what i do anyway.

Can you plaster straight onto Hardwall?

You can plaster directly over hardwall the day after. As Wine~o said, pva either day before or prior to skimming. Try not to over saturate the hardwall as it will blister. Blue Grit will give a much longer workable time.

Can you use SBR as a sealer?

SBR Bonding Agent is a dispersion polymer of carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer. SBR Bonding Agent can also be used as a primer and sealer to improve inter-coat adhesion between successive layers.

Can you tile over multi finish?

At least its new plaster so if it’s been applied correctly, then it’s unlikely to delaminate. Make sure it’s dried out well, couple of coats of primer then off you go. You’ll need flexible tile adhesive (bagged) for porcelain.

Why is Hardwall plaster cracking?

If the background has a lot of suction/or is very dry, the plaster will crack as the moisture is absorbed too quickly into the substrate,, it needs prep first, to control the suction. Too much heat will do the same by drying the plaster to quickly causing it to shrink and crack.

How long before plastering should I PVA?

Nojob Smallenuf New Member. Not a plastering expert but I think the routine is to apply 1 coat of PVA and allow to dry fully i.e. 24 hrs., and then apply second coat of PVA maybe 1 hour or so prior to application of plaster. The second coat should be tacky rather than dry.

Can I tile onto undercoat plaster?

yes you can,but it would be better with a finish coat, there will be to much suction on browning/bonding so you will have to kill the suction with uni-bond/water mix, leave for 24 hours and then tile straight onto the backing coat.

What do you use thistle Hardwall for?

Thistle HardWall is a quick drying undercoat plaster suitable for use on most masonry backgrounds such as bricks, medium-density and aircrete blocks. Thistle HardWall can be hand or spray applied and is ideal for use in a 2-coat plaster system.
