Sculpey is soft and pliable, works and feels like ceramic clay, but will dry out when exposed to air. Super Sculpey is a more durable development of the Original Sculpey, and can be “carved” and used for projects requiring fine details.
How long does Super Sculpey last?
If it is stored correctly, polymer clay lasts indefinitely (a decade or longer). However, it can dry out and it’s possible to ruin it under certain conditions. Before talking about how to tell whether your clay is beyond help and how you may be able to save it, it’s helpful to know what polymer clay is.
How do you keep Super Sculpey from drying out?
Store — Although polymer clay will not air-dry, you still want to properly store your clay to keep it fresh. We recommend storing clay in bags or containers made of polypropylene (PP) plastic. PP containers have a number 5 on the bottom. Keep the clay in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight.

How do you revive Super Sculpey?
In general, the basic procedure is to chop up the clay in tiny bits (with a blade, crumble it up, or use an old thrift store food processor). Then add some Sculpey Clay Softener, mineral or baby oil , or liquid polymer clay to it. Mix it up, put it in a ziploc sandwich bag, and leave it alone for a few days.
Can you bake Sculpey twice?
As long as you’re following the package instructions — and using an oven thermometer to maintain the proper temperature — you can bake polymer clay multiple times and complete a complicated piece in multiple steps.
How do you know when Sculpey is done?
When you remove your Sculpey piece from the oven, you might not think it’s done. The color should have darkened slightly, but not changed substantially, and there should be no brown edges or burnt spots. It will still feel a bit soft — but don’t worry, that’s a good sign.
Can I use olive oil to soften polymer clay?
Olive Oil can be used to soften Polymer Clay but only if the clay is oil-based and it should be done very carefully. Only add one or two drops at a time until the clay is as soft as you want it to be.
How do you soften Super Sculpey?
Warm up the clay by smashing it with a mallet or NeverKnead tool like you would with clay that’s too firm. Next, try crumbling the clay into a food processor and adding different plasticizers little by little. Try each of these plasticizers one at a time until you get one to work: Baby oil or mineral oil.
Can you get Sculpey wet?
Is Sculpey clay waterproof? Yes, once baked, you can seal your project with our Sculpey glazes to make them waterproof. While our clays and glazes are non-toxic, they have not been tested for use with food and cannot be recommended for that use.
Does Sculpey break easily?
Improperly cured clay is very weak and brittle, and susceptible to breaking. Certain polymer clay brands are more brittle than others. These include Sculpey Original and Sculpey III. These brands will break very easily even when they’re baked properly.
Can you air Fry Sculpey?
Yes, you can, its perfectly safe as long as you don’t burn the polymer clay (even then its not toxic, just not very nice).
How long does Sculpey need to bake?
For Original Sculpey, preheat to 275 degrees F (135 C). Bake for 15 minutes per quarter inch of thickness. For example, a piece of 1/2″ thickness should be cured for 30 minutes.
Is Fimo better than Sculpey?
Fimo Soft and Effect Durable after baking, it is a firmer clay than Premo and Sculpey III but not as firm as Kato. Fimo Effect colours have special properties such as mica metallic, glitters, translucents, & faux stones.
How do you condition a Super Sculpey Firm?
To best condition stiff polymer clay, try mixing it with a soft clay to soften it. A small amount of mineral oil may also help. If you’re trying to condition soft clay, try leaching some of the plasticizers from the block to stiffen it.
What does polymer clay feel like after baking?
It will break or cut cleanly, without a crumbly texture. Of course the first hint that you’re finished baking polymer clay is when your kitchen timer dings. But it won’t feel done. Polymer is quite soft when first removed from the oven.
Can you bake polymer clay on tin foil?
You can safely bake polymer clay together with Aluminium foil without any problems, which makes it perfect for creating a core four your polymer clay project.
Do you paint Sculpey before baking?
Yes! Oven-bake clay can be painted after curing. We recommend using water based acrylic paints. If you seal the piece with 2 or 3 thin layers of Sculpey Glaze, you can use any type of paint.
Why does my polymer clay crack after baking?
Polymer clay breaks after baking because it has not cured properly. This is due to either the temperature being too low or it wasn’t baked for long enough. It does also depend on the brand of clay you are using, as some are more brittle, some are harder.
Can you bake Sculpey with wire in it?
You can use a wire armature to stiffen the extended parts of a Sculpy (polymer clay) figure, and bake it without the piece cracking, unlike the way ceramic clay behaves. The thickness to use depends on what type of wire you’re using. You can add on to pre-baked parts successfully.
Do you have to bake Sculpey right away?
Sculpey Clay can be baked on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper or cardstock. Your clay doesn’t need to be baked right away, but if you do wait to bake your clay, put it in a dark, cool place to keep it from drying out.
Why did my Sculpey crack?
Cracking is almost always caused by insufficient curing or by baking a sculpture with uneven thicknesses throughout. To ensure you have a consistent thickness in your piece, we recommend “bulking out” with foil or creating an armature from Super Sculpey UltraLight™.
