Mold release is necessary when working with resin. There are many types of resins for projects, but they all require a mold release to keep the resin from sticking to the mold. Failure to use a mold release generally results in a ruined project, mold or both.
Do you need mold release for epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin allows both artists and do-it-yourselfers to create any shape they wish. But to be able to release the hardened epoxy resin, the casting, well from the mold, a release agent is needed.
What can be used as a release agent for epoxy?
There are a number of aerosol mold release sprays on the market. A couple we’ve used around the tech shop are Stoner® E-497 and E-499 Thermoset Mold Release. They work well for all thermoset resin systems used in most boats – epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester.
What material will Epoxy not stick to?
Epoxy resin adhesives will bond all woods, aluminum and glass well. It does not bond to Teflon, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, or Mylar. It bonds poorly to polyvinyl chloride, acrylic and polycarbonate plastics. The only way to tell if an epoxy will bond to a material is to try it.
Do you need a release agent for silicone molds?

Can I use wd40 as a mold release?

Since cold hot glue doesn’t stick to anything you won’t need to use any other form of mold release. Simply fill the mold with resin and cure it. I cured it in a UV tank that’s meant to cure SLA prints but sticking it in sunlight for a few hours, or under a UV light for 30 minutes works just as well.
Is there a difference between resin and epoxy?
Technically, there is no difference because epoxy is a resin. However, there are three different resins commonly deployed in DIY projects: epoxy resin, casting resin, and polyester resin, each with unique properties. Also important to note, epoxy resin and epoxy glue are different products.

For amateur builders, automotive paste wax made with carnauba wax can often be substituted for mold release wax. Avoid liquid car waxes, as they are not as effective and can cause release problems.

Can you use glass as a resin mold?
Glass does not work as a resin mold. The mold needs to be flexible to release the resin.
What material will Silicone not stick to?
Firstly you need to understand that silicone does not stick to anything other than the adhesive system or the PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive). This means silicone does not interface directly with wood or metal or any other material, instead it interfaces with the PSA itself.
Can I use baking molds for resin?
One thing to keep in mind is if a mold is made of silicone you can use it for resin! Which means baking molds are fare game… just be aware that most resin molds are glossy (which leaves your piece with a glossy shine to the front!) whereas baking molds often leave your piece matte.
