I’m going to refer to Glocks and similar guns (XDM, S&W M&P, etc) as “striker fired” guns. Now technically, many automatic pistols are striker fired including my Beretta and Sig Sauers, in that the external hammer hits a striker rod, which ultimately is the thing that hits the primer, igniting the round.
Can you decock a striker fired pistol?
One of the issues with striker fired handguns is that you cannot decock such handguns with nearly the level of safety that you can a hammer fired gun. I define safety here in terms of the number of barriers between the user of the gun and a negligent discharge.
Are striker fired pistols safe to carry loaded?
They are as safe as the user because the action of pulling the trigger on a striker fired gun also cocks the striker, so they require a long deliberate pull of the trigger to fire them, much like a double action revolver. Unless you pull the trigger it can not and will not fire unless something is wrong with it.
Should I carry one in the chamber?
When you train with the gun and one in the chamber or not, the answer is no. Carrying your self defense weapon, be it concealed carry or open carry, should be as ready as the law allows. There is no wrong way as long as it’s within the confines of the law and you are comfortable with it.

Do cops carry a round in the chamber?
Cops keep a round chambered at all times (with the safety off, if equipped). When you ask an officer how many rounds he/she carries in his/her weapon they’ll respond with an answer something like, “Fifteen plus one.” This means they have a full magazine containing fifteen rounds and one in the chamber.

Are Glocks single or double action?
A glock is both “pre-cocked”, and a double action. The striker is pulled just slightly rearward under the tension of its own spring when the slide is allowed to go forward. However, when you pull the trigger you add an additional “cocking”, if you will, to the striker. This is what makes it double action.

However, that being said, what may be difficult at first can always be improved. With practice, pulling a long, heavy trigger can become easy.
