Question: What Is A Fire Rated Wall

Fire rated walls are designed to contain a fire for a specified amount of time. Fire resistant walls are designed to contain a fire to a room or building for a designated time period. The wall’s rating indicates how long it can keep a fire from spreading.

How do you know if a wall is fire rated?

Open the door and look on the frame and the inside edge of the door next to the hinges. A fire rated door has a metal tag listing the fire rating of the door assembly. All openings through a fire rated wall MUST be sealed with a fire rated caulking (its red in color) so that no air (or flame) can pass through the wall.

What makes a wall a fire wall?

A firewall is an assembly of materials used to separate transformers, structures, or large buildings to prevent the spread of fire by constructing a wall which extends from the foundation through the roof with a prescribed fire resistance duration and independent structural stability.

Do I need a fire rated wall?

For single household units, attached side-by-side dwellings and out-buildings, walls less than 1 m and angled at less than 90° to the boundary must have an FRR of 30/30/30 from both sides of a wall. However, return walls that are 90° or more, even if they are within 1 m of the boundary, do not need an FRR (Figure 1).

What are the 3 main classifications of fire rated walls?

Type 1: Fire-resistive: High-rise buildings made of concrete and protected steel. Type 2: Non-combustible: Newer buildings with tilt slab or reinforced masonry walls and a metal roof. Type 3: Ordinary: New or old buildings with non-combustible walls but a wood-framed roof.

What is fire rated drywall?

Fireproof drywall is the common term; its industry name is Type X drywall. The thickness of this drywall is 5/8-inch, including all layers. Glass fibers are added to the board to help it retard fire. Also, because it is denser than normal gypsum-and-paper drywall, it takes longer for the fire to degrade it.

Are garage walls fire rated?

All garage walls supporting trusses that are common to both the house and garage must be protected as a fire wall with 1 layer of 5/8” type X sheet rock applied to the garage side of the wall.

What is the difference between a fire barrier and a fire wall?

Basically, firewalls are thick exterior walls with a higher fire-resistance rating, while fire barriers are interior walls with a lower fire-resistance rating.

Is insulation required in fire rated walls?

Without the right kind of insulation, and in the best-case scenario, the wall assembly will fail the testing regimen, but in the worst-case scenario, the wrong insulation installed in a Fire Rated Wall Assembly could potentially lead to the loss of life and/or structural failure of epic magnitude.

What is considered a non combustible wall?

Non-combustible materials are building materials that do not burn or ignite when subjected to expected levels of fire or heat. Examples of non-combustible materials include brick masonry, concrete blocks, hardy backer board, calcium silicate board, cement board, metal, and certain types of glass.

Do fire rated walls go from the floor to the underside of the room ceiling?

708.4 Continuity. Fire partitions shall extend from the top of the foundation or floor/ceiling assembly below to the underside of the floor or roof sheathing, slab or deck above OR to the fire-resistance-rated floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling assembly above, and shall be securely attached thereto.

Do I need fireproof plasterboard?

Normally two layers of plasterboard with a skim will give the required fire resistance. If you are not involving planning or building control due to a change of use, then it’s up to you, any plasterboard is better than no plasterboard and as their is no room above the garage their is no additional fire spread risk.

What does a Class A fire rating mean?

Flame spread classifications are developed using the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) “tunnel test.” Class A fire ratings indicate flame-spread of 0-25 and smoke developed between 0-450 and is the highest of the ratings. The Class A or Class I rating indicates superior fire protection.

What does Class A Class 1 fire rating mean?

A class 1 fire rating is the best fire rating of materials that can be achieved. Class A fire ratings indicate a flame spread rating somewhere between zero and 25. Materials that fall into Class A or Class 1 include things like brick, gypsum wallboard, and fiber cement exterior materials.

Is Type C drywall fire rated?

Type C drywall is known as the more durable version of Type X—there are more glass fibers in this product as well as more vermiculite components, giving it a fire resistance of 2-4 hours. You can find this product at your local drywall and insulation store in 1/2” and 5/8” thickness.

What makes a 1 hour fire rated wall?

According to the Engineered Wood Association, a one-hour rating indicates that a wall constructed in a manner similar to the one tested will contain flames and high temperatures, and support its full load, for at least one hour after the fire begins.

Is purple drywall fire rated?

The PURPLE family of products delivers innovative performance that goes well beyond what’s possible with standard drywall. While all gypsum-based drywall is naturally fire-resistant, the PURPLE family of products is unique because it also resists moisture, mold and mildew.
