Can you grow an orchid from a cutting?

Orchids can be grown from cuttings but only if the cut is done after a keiki—a new growth on the side of the Phalaenopsis flower spike or stem—has developed good roots and stems. Orchids can also be propagated through the division of back bulbs.

Can you propagate orchids from aerial roots?

Gardeners commonly use plant propagation for several reasons. This is also known as rhizome propagation. You can also take stem cuttings or cuttings of aerial roots. Some orchid types periodically sprout baby offshoot plants, known as Keiki, and these can also be used in propagation.

Hydroponic orchid growing is also called water culture and may prove to be the solution for an ailing orchid. The method is actually quite easy and fairly foolproof, requiring only an appropriate container, water, sterile tools, and a little patience.

What type of propagation is used for orchids?

What do you do with air roots when repotting orchids?

What do you do with an orchid after the blooms fall off?

After the flowers drop from the orchid you have three choices: leave the flower spike (or stem) intact, cut it back to a node, or remove it entirely. Remove the flower spike entirely by clipping it off at the base of the plant. This is definitely the route to take if the existing stem starts to turn brown or yellow.

Do orchids need soil?

Orchids need fresh potting mix every year or so. This continues to provide plants with the best nutrients and encourages proper air circulation. Soil that is not replaced can retain more water, leading to root rot and leaving your orchid vulnerable to fungal diseases. Your orchid’s roots are soft and brown.

What do you do with an orchids offshoot?

Keikis will eventually grow into a completely separate orchid, but they draw resources away from the mother plant. Some growers let the keiki mature, while others remove it so that the mother plant can thrive. To remove a keiki, simply cut it off with a sharp, sterile blade.

If you suspect a virus, isolate your plant to keep the sickness from spreading. For short spikes, less light is key, so move the orchid away from the window.
