How To Cap A Well

A PVC well casing can be sealed by gluing a PVC cap to the top of the casing. Some metal casings are sealed by welding a plate metal cap to the top of the casing. Another option is to insert a capped casing into the well casing, with the top of the inside pipe resting on the top of the outer well casing.

Also, if the holes are left open children and animals can fall into the wells. If wells are not plugged, they should have a cap capable of supporting at least 400 pounds.

Does a well cap need to be vented?

Well Cover & Cap Requirements & Well Cap Venting: Water wells require a water-tight cap or cover to prevent contamination from surface runoff or flood waters. But some well caps also require an air vent. We describe the parts of a water well and its piping and controls including the pitless adapter.

Can a water well overflow?

The water table is much below the ground, so there is no overflow for normal wells. An artesian well is a different type of aquifer. The well level for the rightmost well is above the water level.

Why is water coming out of my well cap?

If there is water standing around your well it indicates you have a leak. The leak is typically in the water discharge pipe (pipe from your well to the water system). If you have plastic pipes, the fittings sometimes break causing a leak. The breakage is often caused from the movement of the ground.

Can you cap a well yourself?

Wells that are no longer being used but might be needed in the future can be sealed with a cap that covers the top of the well casing pipe to prevent unauthorized access and contamination of the well.

Can you fill a well with water?

It is best that you do not add water into your well. For a well to have water in it, it should be drilled to a depth below the water table in your area. AVOID BURYING THE WELL HEAD UNDERGROUND When a well head is buried under ground, it is at greater risk of surface water infiltration and water being exposed to nearby sources of contamination like road salt, pesticides, fertilizers, oil and even gasoline.

What is a bored well?

Can a well cap be underground?

Some older well caps are located below ground. While they may be properly sealed, a below ground well cap has more potential risk of contamination. To avoid contamination, a well cap should be raised above ground. However, the amount of effort required to raise a well cap will be different in every case.

What does a well cap do?

The well cap seals the upper end of your well to prevent contaminants from entering the well. Well caps are usually made of aluminum or a thermoplastic, and include a vented screen so that the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the well casing is equalized when water is pumped from the well.

Do wells have overflow pipes?
