Preparing the Casting Slip The process of slaking clay to make it into slip is a simple one. Step one is to have a 5-gallon bucket filled 60-75% with your bone-dry clay then add water until it’s a few inches below the rim (figure 1). In slip casting, a slurry of clay and water is poured into a porous mold, usually made of plaster. As the mold is rotated, the slurry coats the mold wall, and water is absorbed into the plaster, thereby drying the slurry closest to the wall. After some time, the mold is emptied of the excess slurry.

Epsom salts are my flocculant of choice. To use Epsom salts as a flocculant, the salts need to be dissolved in water. This breaks up the bond between the magnesium and the sulphate so the magnesium ions are free to attach themselves to the clay particles.

At full load the speed of the motor is 1350 rpm. Hence slip at full load = 5.33% When the motor is so loaded that the rotor speed is reduced to 0, the value of Slip is 1. Hence, value of Slip gradually increases from no-load to full load.
Can you apply slip to bone dry clay?
When slip is applied to bone dry clay, one part of the pottery will be much wetter than the next. As such slip won’t stay liquid and doesn’t create the liquid soup for clay particles to move about in. So, generally slip is not used to join pieces of bone dry clay.
Is slip a glaze?

- Buy 100% silicone caulking.

- Mix 5 tablespoons of cornstarch into the silicone.
- Wipe our original shape with a mold release, such as vegetable oil or vaseline.

It will take 3-4 days at the least for them to be dry enough to use, unless you leave them in the sun all day, or dry the molds in a warm place. Be careful with forced drying, as plaster will start to deteriorate above 130° F or so.
