Can you lay tile over wood floor?

Can you tile on wood floorboards? Good news, yes you can! Tiling over floorboards is possible with the use of plywood or backer boards. In short, a layer of ‘board’ over your floorboards will keep the surface you’re tiling strong and sturdy, and help you minimise any movement from your old floorboards.

Will tile mortar stick to wood?

You can bond tile directly to wood with a flexible adhesive. In any case, to bond tile to wood, you must use a flexible thin-set mortar with a latex additive. Wood shrinks and swells with humidity and frosts, which can break the bond between ordinary tile and thin-set.

Can you tile directly on plywood?

Tile can be laid on plywood. But do not install tile directly on the plywood subfloor itself. Use an intervening layer of a sheet of thinner plywood.

Do you need cement board for tile floor?

What goes under tile?

Can I just screw down backer board?

Screw and Joints Do not use drywall screws as they are not recommended to be used to hold the backer board in place. All of your backer board pieces should be cut before they are placed on​ the floor. It is important to highlight that screws shall not be installed all the way down to the floor joists.

What do you do with a gap between tub and cement board?

Technically, after the tile is installed over the backer board that gap between it and the tub ledge should be filled with an ASTM C920 sealant (caulking e.g. silicone). Although some say you should have weep holes along this gap so any water behind can weep out into the tub.

Why do I need thinset under backer board?

Thinset is going to create a solid surface under tile and prevent flexing that could lead to cracking. Using thinset between the backerboard and subfloor will create additional strength, fill in any potential gaps that exist and lessen the possibility of movement.

How thick should tile subfloor be?

The subfloor under the tile should be at least 1 1/8″ thick, with a minimum of 5/8″ thick exterior grade plywood topped by 1/2″ cement backer board.

Is Ditra better than cement board?

Ditra is waterproof, while cement board lets water through but won’t be damaged by it. This may make Ditra a better choice if moisture from below is a concern, such as with some outdoor applications or installations over concrete.

How thick is backer board for tile?

Half-inch cement backer board is ideal for most tiling jobs, including walls, floors, countertops, and ceilings. For flooring, the backer board should be installed over a 5/8-inch thick OSB or plywood base. For countertops, use 3/4-inch plywood beneath the backer board.

Can you tile over OSB board?

You can lay tile over an OSB subfloor, but a membrane should be installed between the subfloor and the tiles to ensure a bond between the tile and the floor is made. Even if you are looking for a new subfloor to install, OSB is inexpensive and can work well with tile.
