How To Bond A Pool

What happens if a pool is not bonded?

Bonding connects the pool’ s electrical and non-electrical metal components into a network that contains the electricity. Without a bonding system in place, you might conduct stray electrical current when touching the metal pool rail or pool water.

What do you need to bond a pool?

The bonding conductor should be at least 8 AWG or larger solid copper. All metallic parts of the pool’s structure, including reinforcing metal, must be bonded together using solid copper conductors (insulated, covered or bare), and at least 8 AWG, or with rigid metal conduit of brass or other corrosion-resistant metal.

Does an inground pool need to be bonded?

When you properly bound your pool equipment, you greatly reduce the risk of electrical shocks. Bonding is necessary because, even when grounded, electrical equipment can still accumulate charge over time.

Do all above-ground pools need to be bonded?

Local state and federal building codes require all permanent above ground pools to get correctly bonded. A lot of people mistakingly call this grounding the pool; While that is somewhat true, bonding is a little different.

Does above ground pool need to be bonded?

Posted on November 26, 2019 November 21, 2019 , in Above Ground Pools. But with all these electrical components combined with the metal parts of the swimming pool itself comes the potential for great danger. Swimming pools must be properly grounded and bonded to prevent this danger.

Do you need to bond pool water?

The number one concern of any professional installer has to be the safety of all pool swimmers. Most of us are aware that the pool must be bonded, but since 2008 the National Electrical Code (NEC) has mandated that pool water shall be electrically bonded, not just metals in the structure of the pool itself.

How do I test my pool bonding?

Look for an exposed copper wire attached to the motor and pumps, going into the ground. It should connect in a similar way as in the image to the left. If you live in a municipality, you can also contact the building and inspection department to see if your pool had a code inspection during its construction.

Do you have to bond an Intex pool?

All permanent above-ground pools have to get bonded. Softside temporary pools have no such requirement, but it would be a good idea! Bonding is for safety.

Does a pool pump need a ground rod?

YOU DO NOT NEED TO INSTALL GROUND RODS OR RUN THE #8 BONDING CONDUCTOR BACK TO THE SERVICE OR SUB PANEL. Minimum #8 (or larger) solid copper conductor for bonding purposes.

Can I use an extension cord with an above ground pool pump?

It’s highly recommended never to use an extension cord to power a pump of an above ground swimming pool. A pool pump requires a great deal of power and that you can’t provide with a normal extension cord. You’d need one with a #12-gauge wire or a #10-gauge wire.

What is difference between grounding and bonding?

Bonding is the connection of non-current-carrying conductive elements like enclosures and structures. Grounding is the attachment of bonded systems to the earth. Both are necessary to safeguard people and property from electric hazards.

What is pool coping?

WHAT IS POOL COPING? Coping is the term used to identify the material used to cap the pool edge or shell wall. Options available are poured-in-place concrete, precast concrete, tile, and natural stone (pavers, flagstone, etc.). The same forming system, with a Bullnose Travertine Form Liner was used for this vinyl pool.

How do I know if my pool is electrified?

How to test pool water for electricity? One way to test pool water for electricity is to use a device called shock alert. It will notify you if there is electricity present in the water. If it beeps and flashes red, it means there is a presence of electricity in the water and you should not swim in it.

Can you be electrocuted in a pool?

You can get electrocuted in a swimming pool as a result of: (1) faulty electrical wiring to pool equipment such as underwater lights, pumps, filters and vacuums; (2) no GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters) protections for outlets and circuits; and (3) electrical appliances and extension cords entering the water.

Do pools need to be earthed?

In instances where your pool fence is within 1.25m of the pool edge your fence must be earthed to prevent the risk of electrocution. It is a requirement under AS3000:2018 that Equipotential Bonding (earth bonding) is required to pool fencing when the fence is within arm’s reach (1.250m) of the pool edge.

Does my pool pump have to be bonded?

The NEC requires that all electrical equipment, except double-insulated equipment, be bonded together. In addition, all metal within 5 feet of the inside of the pool wall must be bonded with the equipment to form the equipotential bonding grid.

Why does pool water need to be bonded?

Bonding Pool Water: Bonding ensures the safety of all pool swimmers by making sure there is no build up of electricity in the swimming pool water. No current flow can take place between two bonded bodies because they have the same potential. Bonding keeps people and electricity separated.

What year did pool bonding become code?

Pool Electric Codes Passed in 1968, the “Swimming Pool Code” applies to new construction and reconstruction, for all equipment in the image above. In other words, all electrical equipment must comply with the provisions of the National Electric Code; Article 680, and not just pool lighting.
