Do you paint clay after firing?
Typically, potters tend to “paint” their work using other ceramic materials, such as underglazes, slips, and oxide stains. All of these fuse to the clay body when fired to maturity, so they are not likely to wear or flake off, as paint does.
Do you need to fire clay before painting?
Without firing the clay, it really has very little strength and a short life span. We do not recommend using greenware as your final piece of artwork or a base for painting because even if you could get the paint to stick, it would not add protection or strength.
When can you paint clay?
Before you paint make sure the clay is dry. It will change from dark grey to light grey, almost white. When the project has turned colour all over, it is time to paint. It is very important they are completely dry so if in doubt wait another day or two.

The best paint to color air dry clay is tempera. It’s easy to incorporate into the clay and gives rich color. The only reason I picked tempera and not acrylic paint is being washable. Acrylic paints are as good as tempera, but make sure you protect your clothes, table, and hands.

Clay is normally fired twice. The first firing, or bisque fire, takes around 8-10 hours. And the second, or glaze firing takes around 12 hours. So, in total, it takes about 22 hours to fire clay in a kiln.
Does clay have to be bone dry before firing?
Answer: Let the work dry until it is bone dry. That is, when the piece no longer feels cool, but rather feels room temperature, because the moisture left in clay will always make the clay feel “cool”. The time it takes to let clay dry varies with the weather and environment where you are working.
Can you add slip to bone dry clay?
Because the slip shrinks it will tend to flake or peel of bone dry clay. Regular slip is, therefore, best applied to soft or leather hard clay. However, you can also use a slip trailer to apply engobe. In this case, it is possible to slip trail onto bone dry clay and bisque ware too.
Can you apply underglaze to bone dry clay?
The beauty of underglaze is it can be used on either greenware or bisque-fired clay. That said, it’s important to remember that bone-dry clay is one of the most fragile states. So instead, try using it when the clay is leather-hard to prevent potential disasters.
Can you put wet clay on dry clay?
If a wet clay piece is joined to a drier clay piece, the wet clay piece has more shrinking left to do than the drier piece, and so (as it does shrink more) it will create stress and want to crack away from the drier piece.
