How long do you let Rit dye sit before washing?
It really depends on the desired shade and fabric. To achieve the color on the box or bottle, we suggest 30 to 60 minutes with continuous stirring. For lighter shades, we suggest 10 to 20 minutes.

Stirring helps to ensure an even color with no splotches. Item can remain in dyebath from 10 minutes up to one hour with stirring. If dyeing a polyester cotton blend, keep the fabric in the dyebath for at least 30 minutes to ensure that the color takes fully.
Can I use Rit dye in cold water?
Rit, or any other all-purpose dye such as Tintex Hot Water Dye or Dylon Multi Purpose Dye, will not bond to the fiber if applied in cold water. If you want to use all-purpose dye, you’ll have to use hot water; simmering-hot water works the best, much better than hot tap water.
