Polyetherimide, more commonly known in its abbreviated form PEI, is a “relatively maintenance free” build surface that can be used for all types of filament on a heated or unheated print bed.
What is PEI coating?
PEI (Polyetherimide), also known as Ultem, is a reusable “relatively maintenance free” build surface for both ABS (with a Heated Bed) and PLA (hot or cold) requiring no additional adhesives such as glue or tape. PEI is appealing due to its “no-surface-prep” conditions, which make it convenient to work with.
Is Buildtak a PEI?
Buildtak is made from plastic while PEI, or polyetherimide, is a special type of thermoplastic. Additionally, Buildtak comes in a variety of sizes to fit a print bed without any additional cutting or pasting, while PEI sheets are meant to be cut and custom fit to a print bed.
Can you print abs on PEI?
When printing ABS (depending on type and temperature), small bubbles may form on the printing plate, which usually disappear after cooling. If the ABS part is removed from the still warm plate, it is possible that the PEI coating is detached or even damaged.
What is PEI for?
The synthetic polycation polyethylenimine is used to condense plasmid DNA into positively charged 100 nm complexes. These PEI–DNA complexes are then bound to adenovirus particles through charge interactions with negative domains on the viral hexon.
How does PEI work?
PEI condenses DNA into positively charged particles, which bind to anionic cell surface residues and are brought into the cell via endocytosis. Once inside the cell, protonation of the amines results in an influx of counter-ions and a lowering of the osmotic potential.
Can I cut PEI sheet?
If you’re required to cut the PEI sheet to fit the print bed, you can do so with a knife or another type of cutting tool, trimming the corners if your adjustment screws are sticking up through the plate.

Can you print ASA on PEI?
For ASA printing, we recommend using the smooth PEI spring steel sheet. With the powder-coated sheet, the adhesion of the material can be too strong, which could potentially result in damage to the surface of the sheet. The smooth sheet preparation is easy: simply clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol.
How long does BuildTak last?

What temperature should AB beds be?
Printing ABS requires a heated bed at 90°C -100°C. We don’t recommend heating your heated bed above the glass transition temperature of ABS (100°C ).
How do you make PEI?
Preparation of PEI Stocks Dissolve 100 mg in 100 mL sterile ddH 2 O. Stir while slowly adding HCl to pH 7.0. Mix for 10 minutes and then recheck pH. Filter sterilize through 0.22 um filter. Aliquot 500 uL to 1000 uL and store in -80C. Thawed solution can be stored at 4C for up to 2 months, label a tube when thawed.
Is PEI conductive?

Can you sand Pei?

How is polyetherimide made?

Can I clean PEI with acetone?
Under normal circumstances, your cleaning routine should be as simple as: Give the bed a thorough clean with 91%+ isopropyl alcohol. Does acetone dissolve PEI?

Can I use acetone on PEI?
The Prusa3d knowledge base mentions that acetone will “rejuvenate” PEI in addition to cleaning oil and grease from the surface. About once a week, or when prints stop sticking, use ACETONE to clean the bed. It removes grease better than IPA or Windex. It also rejuvenates the print surface.
