New research has found that it’s possible to use 3D printing technology to create “fake fingerprints” that can bypass most fingerprint scanners used by popular devices. The fake fingerprints achieved an 80 percent success rate on average, where the sensors were bypassed at least once.
Can you fake a fingerprint?
In order to fake a fingerprint, one needs an original first. For most home experimenters, this starts by pressing a finger into a piece of putty. Latent fingerprints, or the invisible residue left by fingers, can be used to create a fake fingerprint, but this takes significantly more effort and equipment.
