I get asked a lot if it’s possible to cut acrylic with Silhouette CAMEOthe short answer is no. Since the Silhouette cutting machines can’t cut actual acrylic the secret is Shrinky Dinks.
What is the thickest material a silhouette cameo can cut?
The Silhouette Deep Cut blade can cut materials up to 2mm thick. Those are usually reserved for the Curio, CAMEO 3, Portrait 2 and Silhouette CAMEO 4 which are the machines that have the higher clearance and therefore can cut thicker materials.
How long can I cut on Cameo 4?
The Silhouette Cameo 4 comes with a 12 by 12 inch cutting mat but can cut projects up to 10 feet long. The Cricut Maker’s maximum cutting length is only 24 inches making the Silhouette the machine you want when making larger projects such as banners.
Can the Silhouette Cameo 4 emboss?
No, the Silhouette Cameo 4 does not currently have a tool for embossing paper, card stock or any other material. Silhouette’s embossing solution is the Curio machine. The Curio is designed to compliment the company’s flagship craft cutters with features like embossing, stippling and etching.
Can the Silhouette Cameo 4 cut chipboard?
Yes it can, with the manually-adjusted 3mm Kraft blade. It’s a new tool exclusively for the Cameo 4 that is made for cutting thicker, denser material like balsa wood, chip board or even felt or faux leather. This motor is capable of generating a cutting force of up to 5,000 grams.

No, I wouldn’t buy either of them to cut wood. I’ve used my old cameo to cut ultra thin wood veneer, but it’s very hard on the blade, obviously, which adds up very quickly.
