How Stepper Motor Driver Works

A stepper drive is the driver circuit that controls how the stepper motor operates. Stepper drives work by sending current through various phases in pulses to the stepper motor. Engineers rarely use wave driving: it is inefficient and provides little torque, because only one phase of the motor engages at a time.

What is a stepper motor driver?

A Stepper Motor Driver is the driver circuit that enables the stepper motor to function the way it does. For example, stepper motors require sufficient and controlled energy for phases in a precise sequence. Due to this, stepper motors are considered more advanced than the typical DC motor.

Does stepper motor need driver?

Since a micro-controller has it’s operating voltage limit, say 3.3V or 5V and many stepper motors works at higher voltages than that, then you need a driver to control switching of stepper motor voltages, this should not be done by micro-controller itself, otherwise you’ll end up “frying” the controller.

What voltage is a stepper motor?

Stepper motors have a rated voltage and current. A typical stepper motor like our NEMA 17 might have a rated voltage of 2.8 Volts and a maximum current of 1.68 Amps. This basically means if you hook it up to 2.8 Volts it will draw 1.68 Amps.

Can stepper motors run continuously?

Stepper motors fall somewhere in between a regular DC motor and a servo motor. They have the advantage that they can be positioned accurately, moved forward or backwards one ‘step’ at a time, but they can also rotate continuously.

What is NEMA 17 stepper motor?

NEMA 17 stepper motors are those that have a 1.8 degree step angle (200 steps/revolution) with a 1.7 x 1.7 inch faceplate. NEMA 17 steppers typically have more torque than smaller variants, such as NEMA 14 and have a recommended driving voltage of 12-24V. These steppers are also RoHS compliant.

Why do motors need drivers?

Motor drivers acts as an interface between the motors and the control circuits. Motor require high amount of current whereas the controller circuit works on low current signals. So the function of motor drivers is to take a low-current control signal and then turn it into a higher-current signal that can drive a motor.

How do stepper motors fail?

Short Circuit One of the major problems with a stepper motor is complete motor failure. This problem is caused by excessive current being sent to the device by the power supply. A short circuit in the wiring from the power supply to the motor cause this problem with the stepper motor.

Is a stepper motor AC or DC?

Stepper motors are DC motors that move in discrete steps. They have multiple coils that are organized in groups called “phases”. By energizing each phase in sequence, the motor will rotate, one step at a time. With a computer controlled stepping you can achieve very precise positioning and/or speed control.

What is the maximum speed of stepper motor?

Generally speaking the top speed of a stepper motor is approximately 1000rpm. The exact speeds that are possible depend on the specific motor being used and the controller being used with it.

What is stepper motor inductance?

Series inductance in a step motor is 4 times higher because the two inductors share a common magnetic flux path; the current in one inductor affects the current in the other one. This coupling effect is called mutual inductance and it doubles the inductance.

How much torque can a stepper motor generate?

For example, a conventional size 34 stepper motor can produce 5.9 N-m of holding torque. The ultra-high-torque version of the same motor produces up to 9 N-m of holding torque. For a conventional motor to achieve this same torque rating would require a 31% longer motor.

How long do stepper motors last?

The typical lifetime for a stepper motor is 10,000 operating hours. This approximates to 4.8 years; given the stepper motor operates one eight-hour shift per day. The lifetime of a stepper motor may vary in regards to user application and how rigorous the stepper motor is run.

Which is more accurate stepper or servo?

In general, servo motors are more sophisticated than stepper motors. This enables servo motors to be used with gearboxes to deliver much higher torque at useful speeds. They also deliver more consistent torque across the speed range of the motor. Unlike stepper motors, they do not have holding torque per se.

What is a 42 stepping motor?

NEMA 42 stepper motor is the largest step motor of the stepper motor family. This is known to be the finest type of stepping motor. It has the unique features of both, permanent and variable reluctance motor.

What is a 42 stepper motor?

High-torque stepper motor in size NEMA 42 (110 mm) with 1.8° step angle (full step). Ideal solution for direct drives because of its high torque in relation to the motor size. Available in three lengths.

What is kg cm in stepper motor?

In your case 3 kg.cm means that a “force” of 3 kg acting at a radius of 1 cm would produce the same amount of torque as your motor. Equally that could be 0.1 kg x 30 cm, or 10 kg x 0.3 cm or FWIW – kg is a unit of mass and Newton the corresponding unit of force.

What is rpm of dc motor?

RPM, which stands for revolutions per minute, is the amount of times the shaft of a DC motor completes a full spin cycle per minute. The amount of 360° turns, or revolutions, a motor does in a minute is its RPM value. So a motor with an RPM of 24,000 is much more high speed than a motor which has 2400RPM.

What is the role of driver circuit in interfacing of stepper motor with microcontroller?

The main principle of the project and its circuits is to rotate the stepper motor step wise at a particular step angle. The project will be using a ULN2003 IC and the L293D Motor Driver to drive the stepper motor as the controller cannot provide current required by the motor.
