While you might think that regular thinset mortar or adhesive can be used, only epoxy will bond tile to plastic and metal surfaces, but, generally, a tub surround isn’t an acceptable surface.
Can you tile over plastic tub surround?
Tiling the entirety of a plastic tub is a do-it-yourself-only project. A plastic tub is not a solid enough surface to adhere tile to, as there is too much flexibility, which means it is not rated for adhesion with the mastics and thinset mortars available with tile, with the exception of epoxy.

i personally and most pretty much every tiler i know would never reccomend tiling on to a pvc box, your best bet would be to do as mattle40 says and buld a new box. but i would use drywall as apposed to ply. drywall is better at deflecting the heat from the pipes.
