What type of pipe is best for dust collection?
PVC is commonly used in dust collection systems. Typically for longer runs you should use 6″ or larger pipe, regardless of the material. If you’re using PVC, the larger, less expensive pipe is commonly available as sewer drain pipe.
Do you need to ground metal dust collection system?
Should you ground your dust collection system? Whatever the risks of explosion or fire, taking a “better safe than sorry” attitude and equipping your PVC ductwork with a grounding system will at least prevent you from suffering a nasty zap when you brush up against a dust collection port.
Is PVC or metal better for dust collection?
PVC dust collection is perfectly safe, much cheaper and much easier to install than metal. The velocities and volumes generated from your average hobby or small shop dust collector is not nearly enough to cause a static discharge that could result in a deflagration of a dust cloud.
Can you use Schedule 40 PVC for dust?
What kind of PVC is best for ductwork? Schedule 40 DWV (drain, waste, vent) PVC is the heaviest and thickest wall material commonly available, and it works great. This is covered in the Popular Woodworking webinar “Dust Collection Ductwork.”May 8, 2014.
Can you use dryer hose for dust collection?
Re: dryer hose for dust collector??? Yup, it’ll work, but it’s really bad for pressure drop. All that rough interior will drop the air flow a ton. Keep it as short as possible.
Can I use ABS pipe for dust collection?
The ABS fittings fit perfect inside the pipe. It is thinner walled pipe that sch. 40, so you have to make sure you get the right stuff. You can use the S&D Y fittings as well, I found them to be a little cheaper than the ABS y fittings for dust collection.
Can you ground PVC?
When electrostatic charge buildup is possible, such as in ventilation ducts, PVC pipes should be grounded. However, PVC is an insulator and, as a result, in order to ground PVC pipes a conductor must be added.
What is a blast gate for on a dust collection system?
Blast gates are used to focus a dust collection system’s vacuum pressure for maximum material extraction at the desired location. Blast gates control the air flow from one machine to another and to maximize system efficiency; specific lines in the system may be shut off to allow more air flow to another machine.
What size of dust collector do I need?
If it’s round, measure the diameter. For a rectangle, multiply the length by width, then multiply that number by 28 to find the flow of CFM at 4,000 feet per minute (fpm) airflow. Find the largest CFM number out of all your tools, and that’s what you’ll go on for the required rating for your dust collector.
How do anti static hoses work?
The anti-static hoses work to prevent the build up when the ducting is firmly grounded and attached to the ventilation device. Along with the ability to prevent static build-up, our static dissipative hose is also extremely durable.
How do you make static dust attract?
Use Electrostatic Cloths Instead of an old piece of fabric, dust with an electrostatic cloth. These charged materials attract dust particles using static electricity. They hang onto the dust you pick up better than a plain dry cloth does, and they don’t send particles flying into the air the way a feather duster does.
Why does wood dust explode?
Wood dust is considered to be explosive if ignition of part of a cloud of wood dust results in the propagation of flame through the rest of the cloud. If the wood dust is contained within a full or partial enclosure, the pressure build up can produce a destructive explosion.
Does PVC cause static electricity?
Hold the PVC pipe an inch or two away from the can and watch the attraction forces at work. Why it works: When you rub the PVC pipe on the fuzzy material, electrons build up a negative charge on the pipe. These electrons can then pull light and positively charged objects!Aug 1, 2019.
How do I get rid of static on my shop vac?
The fix is remarkably simple: Take two feet of bare copper wire. Unscrew your vacuum cuff. Wrap about a foot of the wire around the hose where the cuff goes. Screw the vacuum cuff back on over the copper wire. Run the remaining copper wire up the inside of the vacuum hose.
Is 650 cfm enough for dust collection?
A 3/4 -hp, 650 CFM collector, like the wall-mounted unit shown below might be the perfect solution for a small shop. It’s small enough to move around the shop as needed and conveniently hangs on the wall, out of the way of your tools.
Is 1 HP dust collector enough?
PVC pipes, in short runs, work fine with a sufficiently powered collector, 11/2 hp or more. Metal duct, not unexpectedly, performs best. Even an 8-year-old, 1-hp col-lector can collect chips from machines 25 ft. And even a 1-hp singlestage dust collector can handle that machine, hooked up with about 6 ft.
Can I put a bigger motor on my dust collector?
Simply bolting on a larger motor to the existing impeller will only ensure the motor is not working as hard as the 2HP current motor, Its not going to spin faster, but it will ramp up to speed faster and that may not be good either.
Can I use a vacuum cleaner for dust extraction?
A shop-vac (generic use, not the name brand) will work just fine for light-duty dust collection. Particularly when the dust stream is run through a cyclone collector.
